DECEMBER 7: Love has a rebellious streak

We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father full of grace and truth.*

If Jesus is the best impression we can have of God and God’s perfect love, God’s love for you must be full of grace.

Grace is the rebellious streak of love.

It doesn’t follow the rules. It doesn’t wait for the test results or grades to come back. Maybe the fact that he first appeared in a feeding trough was to make sure everyone knew they were welcome. As his life progressed, the more extravagant the sinner, the more compassion they seemed to get from Jesus.

But the rules say I messed up.”

“But I love you.”

“Yeah, but I’m not sure I trust you. That’s not fair.”

“I know. I love you.”

“But I’m going to betray you again…I might even like it.”

“I know. I love you.”

At first glance, this idea that God accepts you and loves you just like you are might lead you to feel embarrassed or pitiful. God, perfect. You, the needy, filthy child who doesn’t deserve a scrap of bread. Not love. Pity.

What do you think God feels when He thinks about you? If you could audibly hear God’s voice, what do you think it would sound like? Patronizing? Exhausted? Angry? Rushed? Demanding?

Perhaps an old, Hebrew prophecy forecasting God’s in-the-flesh arrival helps tune into the tones of grace in God’s voice to you.

“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.”**

A literal translation could be “You give Him so much joy, he sings to you.”

Can you imagine? Can you imagine right now, with the anxiety you’re feeling, the shame you’re feeling, the ambition that’s consuming all your attention, the fear haunting you; your Father, right now, singing a lullaby to you? A love song to you? A pump-you-up-let’s-start-over-and-sieze-this-day song to you?

“But I’m going to betray you again…”

“I know. I love you.”

PRAYER FOR TODAY

“Help me hear Your love song over me today. Let Your delight in me be the soundtrack behind my struggles, behind my confidence, behind my willingness to be real with you. I am loved, no matter what.”
